Design Brief

The problem that my group is trying to solve is that we are trying to raise awareness of Digital Health and Wellness. I have found some websites that explain how dangerous technology use can become when people use it more than what they should. For my PSA, I am planning to just make a video with pictures that demonstrate how technology can be dangerous and explaining some information. Some materials that I will use is only the computer and the internet to find the images of my choice. I will probably use a slow light sounded song in the background.

Digital Health and Wellness

So far I've been researching a lot and looking for reliable sources to use. I am still not sure of what type of PSA I am going to do, so I need to get together with my partner to agree on it. We either have the option of making a real video or just making a video that consists of images and factual information.

Thesis Statement- Digital Health & Wellness

Digital Health and Wellness is the physical and psychological well-being in a technology world. This is a very important matter because safety is always first. People have been known to become addicted the Internet and this causes psychological problems. Physical problems may also occur like eye damage and repetitive stress syndrome. Internet users should be taught that there are dangers in technology that might damage their health (mentally or physically).

The Final Product

GoAnimate

Evaluation

I think that my final product turned out to be pretty good. I was able to explain what the design cycle was, but I still need to make a survey and test out a 6th grade student.

My progress

My progress

So far this is my progress on my video, I have completed most of the dialogue between my characters, and all I need is the finishing scene.  For the most part, this is what my first design is going to look like.

Three Design Ideas for GoAnimate

First Design:
For my first design, I have planned to create an animated video showing a couple of characters discussing the Design Cycle and what it is.

Second Design:
For my second design I intend to create a video that demonstrates the characters actually using the Design Cycle in order to solve a product.

Third Design:
For my last design, I plan to create an animated video that describes the Design Cycle and just informs the viewer/6th grader. This video should have detailed and specific information.

Chart

My total is near 200 minutes divided by 60 that is about 3 hours. Now I can plan how I will use each day from now until October 11 to complete my project.
(September 30) Day 1 - 35 mins: Finish up the Design process and start the next.
(October 1) Day 2 -35 mins: Officially start the create process.
(October 2) Day 3-35 mins : Create the three designs and choose the most efficient.
(October 3) Day 4-35 mins:
(October 4) Day 5-35 mins:
(October 5) Day 6-35 mins: Evaluation

Reflection

In the past few days we have been working on the "Investigate" part of the Design Cycle and I would give my progress a score of 5-6 (95/100). I have been working on this section of the Design Cycle and I'm almost done with it, all I need is to formulate a design specification. I have decided to give myself this score because I have identified and described the problem which is how to explain the Design Cycle to a 6th grader. In order to solve this problem, I have studied and analyzed some solutions like GoAnimate and an animated flip book to create my final product which will explain the Design Cycle to the 6th grader. I have compared and contrasted these two programs and I have evaluated on how the final product would look like and which one would be better.

Design Specification

1. The animated video from GoAnimate is designed to educate a 6th grader about the design cycle.

2. The final product should be simple to use/see and it should grab the 6th grader's attention. The final product should be able to explain the Design Cycle to a student as small as a 6th grader.

Design Brief

10. Write a short statement of what you are going to make, why you are going to make it, and for whom you are making it.
I will be making a GoAnimate video explaining the stages of the Design Cycle. I am going to create an animated video to explain the Design Cycle to a 6th grader.
11. What are the requirements for this assignment?
I am going to have a few ideas drawn out of what I want to create.
12. What are the limitations you have with this assignment?
Some limitations are that we don't have class everyday so time is cut short and we can't loose any time if I want to complete the final product on time.
13. How will you "test" your project?
I will try to show my final product to a 6th grader and get his opinion on my final product.

Investigation Comparison- Flip Book

 Measurements
 Score
(1-5)
 Simplicity
 5
 Text Choices
 3
 Character Choices
 2
 Creativity
 4
 Total Score:
 14

Simplicity:
This is a very important factor to my project and this animated flip book has all the requirements and has an extremely high level of simplicity. This flip book is a great way to reach my goal of explaining the Design Cycle to a 6th grader because it is very fun to use and very entertaining. Even though the flip book is very simple to use, it has a difficult part because you actually have to draw the things out in the computer and depending on the idea, it may be very easy or very difficult.

Text Choices:
Text choices is also a very important measurement because it seems that it would be easier to explain to a 6th grader if the text would be some kind of attention-grabber, but the text choices in the flipbook are very minimum. In the flipbook, you personally have to create your own text (font) and it is very difficult to complete it succesfully. It is because of this that I decided to give it a score of 3.

Character Choices:
In the flipbook, you don't really choose your charcters, but you actually draw them out. This could have a positive side and a negative side depending if you are a good drawer. I didn't really like this because it seems to complicated and I don't have the skills to make my own characters, so I decided to give it a score of 2. Having the correct characters is essential because it is what the 6th grader's attention should go to so I need a program that has creative characters.

Creativity:
The creativity level that corresponds to the flipbook is high and that is something that I need in order to complete my final product. What makes the flipbook so creative is that you get to do everything your own way and everything is pretty much personalized to your wanting. I like this because this way I get to create what I have planned out in my mind, but at the same time it is very difficult to use and because of this, I decided to give it a score of 4.

Simplicity:
The Simplicity in GoAnimate is very high and it is very simple for the the 6th grader to understand the concept of the Design Cycle. GoAnimate is also very easy to us for my own personal use since it has very simple steps to create an animated video. Thanks to the tutorial in GoAnimate, my product creation is facilitated a lot more. Due to the very high simplicity level of GoAnimate, I gave it a score of 5 since it is very easy and fun to use.

Text Choices:
In GoAnimate there is a wide variety of texts choices. You are able to create your own personalized script and the characters you created will recite the script that corresponds to them. This is very useful because it will make it a lot more easier for the 6th grader to understand since he will just be hearing the information and not just reading. Because of the great text choice, I gave GoAnimate a score of 3 because it helps keep anyone entertained.

Character Choices:
GoAnimate has a short variety in characters, but the characters that are provided are very entertaining looking and grabs the viewer's attention. Even though there isn't much to choose from, I don't need a vast variety in order to explain the Design Cycle to a 6th grade student. I decided to give this a score of 4 since it didn't have a big variety but it still meets the requirements.

Creativity Choices:
GoAnimate seems to me to be very creative due to its great simplicity, text, and character choices. The level of easiness is very high and the creativity level is very high and that really caught my attention. I really liked GoAnimate because it definitely grabs the viewers attention and it informs at the same time. It is for those reasons that I gave it a score of 4.

Reflection

http://goanimate.com/
This is an animated video and it seems to me that it is very creative. It looks simple to use and it appears to go straight to the point. This seems like it would be able to catch a 6th graders' attention and it'll be able to explain what the Design Cycle is in a very creative and simple way.

This is a flip book in which you do a design in every "page" and it becomes animated as the pages flip. This seems very easy to use but not as creative as the first one. I think that this could be a good method to explain the Design Cycle to a 6th grader, but it seems too simple and it seems to me that it'll be better for a lower grade level.

I compared both of these web pages to see which one could be better t be used to explain the Design Cycle to a 6th grader, and I was able to see that both of them are very fun and creative. Both are simple and I would be able to complete my final product by using any of them. As a result, I decided to use the first website and create an animated video based on the Design Cycle because it looks funner and more creative than the animated flip book.
